I am pleased to speak todayas a representative of all interna-tional institutions who have joinedme from around the world andare present here. It is indeed anhonour for all of us to be part-ners with such a fine institutionas SouthWest Petroleum Universi-ty.To all SWPU faculty, staff, stu-dents and alumni, congratulationson your excellence on academia!Over the past 60 years, you havetrained 170 thousands of highlyqualified personnel. They are con-tributing their skills and knowl-edge in different industries aroundthe globe.I would also like to congratu-late you on your research accom-plishments! You have more than
128 Research Centers and manykey laboratories doing some ofthe most important research inthe world. Your students and pro-fessors have won many awardsand their work will indeed im-prove our world. That is what u-niversities are all about and SouthWest Petroleum University hasgained a huge success in that re-gard.The University of Regina has aspecial relationship with China.More than 40 years ago, we wereone of the first Canadian Universi-ties to develop partnerships inChina. The University of Reginaformally signed the first academicagreement with Shandong Univer-sity in 1981. Since then thousandsof students and hundreds of visit-ing scholars have had the oppor-tunity to study in both countries.In November 2011, the previousPresident of SWPU Professor Duvisited the University of Regina.Since the signing of first MOU,both universities have worked
hard to createopportunities tosupport studentmobility and fac-ulty mobility.During the pastseven years,many youngscholars and stu-dents have visit-ed the Universityof Regina andsome of them have become lead-ers in different faculties upontheir return to SWPU. On behalfof the University of Regina, I sin-cerely welcome you to come andvisit us again.You have come a long way,your international reach is nowextensive with partnerships inmore than 10 different countriesaround the world. You have beenselected as one of the“dou-ble-first class”universities in Chinaand one of the universities withA+ discipline. What an accomplish-ment!
We are looking forward to fur-ther strengthening our collabora-tions. I know we share differentcultures, but as post-secondary e-ducation institutions, we have thesame objective, which is to edu-cate our people, to serve ourpeople and to create a betterworld for everyone.Once again, I would like tothank you for the opportunity toaddress this distinguished forum.
